What the heck is a saw til and dovetails anyway??

This was a fun little project.  And yes, I made a little cabinet to hold my saws.  This was also a practice project so I could learn how to cut dovetails for my next project .. the "flippin' potty cabinet!"

The carcass is made of alder that I got off of Craig's List and the dark wood is walnut.

The tab on the front face lifts the saw with longer handles up so that their weight is on the front face and not resting on the interior shelf.  This allowed me to keep the height of the cabinet shorter.

Here are a couple of the dovetails.  Top and bottom.

Shannon had the suggestion that I wedge peg the front face. (Click on Picture to see pegs)
The drawer turned out pretty nicely as well and I got to do some half-blind dovetails (Note: not harm was done to any doves during the making of the half-blind dovetails.)

  1. Very nicely done. Great idea to add the tab for the saw handles.

  2. It's a booster seat for the not so tall saws. :)

  3. Your DTs are getting better and better! Pretty little saw tote!

  4. Did you attach it to the wall with a french cleat system or just screw it to a couple of studs? Looks great. Is the finish oil based or a wipe on poly-varnish?

  5. I did use a french cleat. The cabinet isn't supper heavy, but I thought that would best. And I did use a wipe on poly-varnish. That finish usually works pretty well for me especially since I'm really not into finishing all that much.

  6. I live on the eastside and have dabbled on using craiglist to find tools and wood. What kind of search (meaning the criteria) did you use to come across wood? Very nice saw till. After my current project (building guitars), I plan to do a few shop projects such as a saw till too.

  7. I have a search set up for "hardwood lumber". I have to be pretty picky and have only had a really good find twice. See my post about A Wood Working Journey -> http://sheworkswood.blogspot.com/2011/04/woodworking-journey.html

  8. Nice work. Shop projects are a great place to hone craftsmanship and this a great example.

  9. Thanks so much Peter! The dovetails on this project were practice for the wall cabinet I'm currently making.

  10. From the looks of your other projects, the saw til, which has intimidated me for a couple years, was sandbox play. Some quite impressive work. I too like the cleats for the saw handles. I'm trying to figure out how to do a cross cultural til: I have two western and five Japanese saws. I think I want to fiddle with the height as well. Thanks for the inspirition.
